YAY! Vicki I was just about to suggest that one. So much fun for alot of my clients that have come here with children. Lately I have had some wonderful children come to visit the area with their parents, but you know all that house hunting can't be all that fun for them. They like it to an extent, but then just want to have some fun. They really enjoy the models in new construction that are all decked out, but take them in these empty cold houses this time of year...we might have some complaints.
Museum of Life & Science in Durham (great kids museum!)
Museum of Natural History in downtown Raleigh
Planetarium at UNC
Exploris in Raleigh
Hehe, the above would have been my idea of a good time (and still is) But the gocarts, etc sound like a lot of fun too. I'm sure the kids appreciate being able to let out some energy after house hunting
Try taking them to Frankie's near Brier Creek. It has indoor games and a few rides and outdoor go carts and things like that!

Hmmm... maybe *that* explains why the nieces and nephews never ask to get sent down to stay with Aunt and Uncle BCR. :-) Good call on the Frankie's.
I will add (back on the quasi-educational riff) that, for those looking for a full-day experience and don't mind travelling outside the Triangle, the NC Zoo in Asheboro is really exceptional. We took my then-six year old there last year and he had a great time (it's an awesome facility). Lots and lots of walking though, which poops out the little ones...

I think on that second one, you're mentally fusing two neighboring museums together: Museum of History + Museum of Natural Science.
As far as "too educational"...it depends. The planetarium is just as entertaining as educational for many. And Exploris has that great IMAX theatre that shows both educational films and regular hollywood releases, so it depends on what you do there. And the Durham Life & Science Museum is very hands-on...with live animals and such. What kid doesn't like to see live wild animals?
Along with the Museums and Frankies, the IMAX theater is really great- the shows are usually a bit educational and would be age appropriate for both children. You could also go to one of the parks-Umpstead or Blue Jay in North Raleigh. They have walking trails and some playgrounds for your younger child. We always work in a small amount of time at a golf driving range. They supply the clubs and it breaks up the day a bit. There is one on Leesville Road. If you check the parents magazine, you may be able to find a dropoff playcenter for your younger child by the Brier Creek area. They are very flexible about the drop off/pick up times and the kids seem to like it. Looking for homes can be such a bore for young children. Hope it helps. Good luck!
