Can anyone recommend a good massage therapist for a deep tissue sports massage? I'm looking for someone who is experienced working with athletes.
Typically, "day spas" don't provide a deep enough massage, nor are they specialized to work with athletes. I'm looking for a recommendation for a specific individual, not a great spa.

The biggest problem with seeking out "individual" therapists and not going to a spa, or massage business, is most are offering sensual massages. You may not be able to tell the difference either, so be careful. I get regular massage for my lower back and always ask to make sure it is non sexual, non sensual. There are a few advertising on the web, but again, make sure you know specifically what you are getting, or you might get more then your bargained for. I learned this lesson the hard way once. I had no idea what a "happy ending" was.
I've heard there is a sports massage guy at the Alexander YMCA who is very popular and a little difficult to get an appointment with. You might also want to check with other area YMCAs, as I think several have offered massage at various times through subcontractors. See who they used!
Check the Umstead Massage. This is the best massage I have ever gotten (mainly because of the full package you get with the massage, including light snacks, drinks, hot tub, steam room, sauna, etc)

Concentrating on specific areas of the body, this treatment increases flexibility for those muscle groups directly related to certain sports. It will also prepare you for a one-on-one training session and helps speed muscle recovery after vigorous exercise.
I know that Progress Physical Therapy near Rex does the PT, including massage, for the Hurricanes and the Carolina Ballet. They helped me with a tennis injury. I can also recommend Hands on Health for therapeutic massage. They also do massage for relaxation, but specialize in massage to address physical issues. They got me through three months of bedrest with twins, which has a lot of physical issues, such as blood clot potential, etc.
