My husband and I currently live in Iowa and we are considering relocating to the Raleigh area sometime within the next year. It is mostly dependant on my husband finding a job in the area.
We decided to take the first week in January and drive down to NC to check things out. I'm a soon to be RN and my husband works in IT (mostly web server admin). We will probably be looking for houses in the 250K range, in a family friendly area. We don't have kids yet, but hope to soon. NC really appeals to us because of the weather and proximity to mountains/ocean... we are pretty land locked here and we want more variety in a location where we can still afford to live. We've been to coastal SC a few times, and drove through NC and really liked it but didn't get a chance to stop and check things out.
What should we be sure to check out as far as eating out/entertainment in January goes?
What is the housing market like right now? We have been looking online and love the housing styles at massey preserve.
Any advice would be great, we want to see as much as we can

My sister lives in Carey, just outside of Raleigh, and the neighborhood is beautiful, houses right in your price range. But beware, things are much cheaper in Iowa. Taxes, food, gas, utilites, all much more expensive in NC, so plan for that in your budget. The trade off is the great weather. I'm tired of Iowa winters, ready to thaw out. Wish you success in your move.

Sounds like Apex, Cary or SW Durham may be a good area for you. Apex and Cary are very family friendly. Cary has a great location that offers access to all surrounding towns, shopping & dining and many employers, including companies in RTP. SW Durham is great for access to many things and is safer than many other parts of Durham.
Come on down. Since you want something family friendly, try Cary, Apex, Holly Springs on for size. Cary is close to Raleigh and is a VERY nice place, but can be pricey -- however, I think you could find something in your range. Apex has a lot to choose from in the 250K range. Holly Springs as well, but it is a bit further "out." You will LOVE the proximity to the mountains, Outer Banks, Myrtle Beach, etc. The four seasons are really nice. The Cary schools are good too.
Personally I would look at finding a job first and then figuring out where to live. There would be different recommendations if you found a job in:
Chapel Hill
Durham
Research Triangle Park
Raleigh
Etc.

It seems that this conflict others opinion, because some people here are saying that you need to find job in Raleigh first before looking for a place to live or moving there, but some people also say that you can't get a job in NC if you don't have a local address, is there a way or can anyone clear this up for us who wants to move to NC?

It is prudent to have employment arranged, to be able to rent a place, and to be able to get established, make money, eat, etc.
But, that is not necessarily the only right thing to do, depending on personal situation and job skills.
If you have a very good nest egg to support yourself, or a skill set that is in high demand, and no entanglements like dependent children for whom you have to provide the necessities, it may work to come without employment.
If you have three rug rats shoving their growing feet under your dinner table, and they need dental care and new shoes, and you have $20 discretionary, it may be quite foolhardy and irresponsible to move to a new area and not have the capability to care for those who depend on you for subsistence.
If you are single and easily roll with the punches, and no one is counting on you, well, heck, there maybe ought to be a little adventure in life, I suppose.
We're just trying to get a feel for the place right now.
