I am moving to Durham for a job at NCCU and you guys have been so helpful. I am coming down in a few weeks to look for a place to live and have narrowed down a few options in the city of Durham but would also like to check out the chapel hill area. What area (s) of chapel hill would give me the most reasonable commute to central durham (NCCU)?

The shortest commute would be from the area of the Weaver Dairy/Erwin Rd intersection, the colony woods area or Meadowmont area (with Erwin Rd being the most pleasant commute), about 15 min. The longest commute will be 30-35 min (a little shorter with no traffic) from the west end of Carrboro or Southern Village

I second what Toot said. Somewhere near Weaver Dairy/Erwin would be idea. However, you're still looking at a good 25 min commute. From my place in SW Durham it takes me about 10 mins on a lite traffic day to get to Fayetteville Rd where NCCU is located. You can easily tack another 15 mins onto that time coming from a spot in northern CH such as the Weaver Dairy St area.

My mother works in Durham while my father works in UNC and I go to school in the CHCCS school district, so we have faced a similar issue. The best place is without a doubt the subdivisions near Weaver Diary, Timberlyne, etc.
You pass the entrance to my subdivision, the name of which I won't post online, literally just 20 seconds or so after crossing into Chapel Hill from Durham

I am not sure what the best route would be to travel to NCCU from Chapel Hill, but the traffic on 15-501 at rush hour is pretty bad. I would try driving around during rush hour before making a decision. They may have improved this area, but from what I recall this has been pretty painful

Just my 2 cents.

Just looking at the route they give on Mapquest, taking you up to the Durham Freeway (147) it a great move.

from: Erwin Rd, Durham, NC to: 1801 Fayetteville St, Durham, NC 27707 (North Carolina Central University) - Google Maps

I agree during rush hour you want to avoid 15-501 on the Chapel Hill/Durham border. Instead you just drive up Erwin, it takes 8-10 minutes to drive from Weaver Dairy to the 15-501 intersection on NC-751. From there you drive 4 miles on 15-501 and the durham freeway to Alston. 15 minutes, give or take a couple minutes if you get hung up at a stoplight.
