I have a very tricky case with a 20 year old root canal that has become infected. I have taken a round of antibiotics, but I still have pressure and weird sensation in the gum area. I live in a rural area and my local endodontist can't see me for another 3 weeks.
My friend told me to come to the triangle and see someone in NC ASAP. She lives in Cary, but I can go anywhere in the triangle to get this done right.
I cannot more highly recommend Dr Linda Levin in Durham. She dealt with a complicated, re-infected root canal for me, and explained everything. She is a past president of the American Endodontists' Association -- I'm not sure of the exact name of the Association, but it does give an idea of how well thought of she is.
If the tooth has already been root canaled you will likely need an apicoectomy where they get to the infection through the gum, and an oral surgeon does that.
For endodontist my DH had a really good experience with Ronald Sopko in Raleigh.
Your first stop should be your dentist for an x-ray

Yes, I have been to a dentist, had an Xray, prescribed antibiotics and he referred me to my local endodontist. I wondered if I would need an oral surgeon. Any recommendations?
I see on my referral the dentist mentioned possible apicoectomy. I see some endodontists have this procedure on their websites. So both endodontists and oral surgeons do this procedure?
I had mine done by an oral surgeon. That was in NY. THe most highly recommended oral surgeons in this area are Triangle IMplant Dentistry (highway 55 in Durham) Cary Oral Surgery (also has an office in Garner I think) and Central Carolina Oral Surgery in Apex. Good luck. The apico is not so bad.
I have had an implant done at Triangle Implant Center, which is near the corner of 55 and Sedwick Road in Durham. Expensive, but very good experience with Dr. Reebye and his staff.
I have had two root canals done by Dr. Roger McDougal in the Southpoint office center near Kokyu on 54 in Durham just east of Fayetteville Road.. Also very good experience. Their way of scheduling is a bit strange and you should be prepared to come early if they ask you to, but great office staff and excellent results. https://www.mcdougalendo.org/
Even long after I moved away, I kept up with appointments with a (now-retired) oral surgeon at UNC's Dental Faculty Practice: https://www.dentistry.unc.edu/dfp/
Not to be confused with the Dental Clinic, where students practice.
