Yet another surprise - everywhere I've lived before, the regular trash service picked up Christmas trees. But it seems that the services in Johnston County don't do that.
So what do I do with my tree?

Was wondering the same thing - I still have our tree up (family coming to town this weekend and its nice decor) but our neighbors have all gone through 2 trash cycles with their trees left at the curb.

Some places haven't started yet. I'm in Cary I think curbside pick up starts this week. My tree is still sitting on the curb!

Sorry- don't want to hijack your post for Johnston County, but for those in Durham, I called the city to confirm what it says on their website and they said yes, they were supposed to start collecting Christmas trees yesterday. I was told to call tomorrow if the truck did not come by today....and it didn't
I called before your post Ryan..thanks for the heads up!

According to the Johnston County website, people who do not have landfill decals can take their Christmas trees to the county landfill for disposal for a small fee.
|
Nice. I have to haul it to the landfill and pay them to take it. That's a rather nasty surprise when you're used to being able to put it out with the trash.
I've also been told there is no yardwaste pickup in the county, either, and the services aren't allowed to pick up yardwaste. Why is that?

Hmmm... in our S. Durham neighborhood they picked up trees on Monday. Maybe you guys are later in the route and the truck was full on your day. ???
In Johnston County maybe try calling the Ag Extension office to see if they have any ideas where you can locally recycle your tree. Or maybe the Johnston Co Soil and Water Conservation District might know???
BTW, in Portland the Boy Scouts biggest fund rasier was collecting Christmas Trees and recyling them. (The city had a facility to recycle them.) They had 2 ways of doing it. One troop had you drop off the tree at a school parking lot between certain hours and make a $5.00 donation. The other troop had you leave your tree at the curb w/ an envelope containing the donation tied to the tree.
Great service project and money maker. Sounds like some group in Johnston Co needs to get on this next year.
