We are going to be in Durham for a wedding in the middle of March and will have about 1 1/2 days to see the sights. What would you recommend that we see and where are some good places to eat (non-chain, regional specialties, not expensive, good food). In terms of things to see, we tend to like factory tours, science museums, craft shows, mostly things that we wouldn't be able to find in other areas of the country. It's just going to be adults (no kids), if that's helpful. Thanks for any assistance.

Sara P Duke Gardens, Tobacco district, and the area over by Duke grad housing, whole foods - darn, I can't remember the name of the exit from 147 - swift street? 4th street I think is where the local eateries are, and then there's downtown with lots of local flavor.

As for food, I think it'd be best to map out where in Durham you plan to go first and then plan the eats as travel/time allows. For example, you don't want to be at the museum (N. Durham) and then decide to go eat somewhere in the Southpoint area (SW Durham).

Also, where would your hotel be located?

For me, our must have stop when we visited was Brigs at the Park (SW Durham close to RTP) for breakfast (small local chain). I LOVE their food. They do tend to be packed on weekends mornings though, so if you get there early, you should be okay.

Allen and Sons BBQ in Chapel Hill (not too far from parts of Durham) is excellent but closed Sundays.

Also, you could do Durham on your full day and check out Hillsborough for your half day (if you are interested in seeing a small historic town).

Bullock's BBQ is not too far from the Museum of Life & Science and very close to the original LocoPop's location, which is not far from 9th Street either. I recommend getting the family style at Bullock's so you can get a taste of several things. Have cash as they don't accept credit cards!!
