Criminey. Nowadays I just pack heat in Durham; looks like I'm going to need to start carrying in Raleigh as well. Maybe I'll just hang in Cary.

The title of the thread is a little misleading. In 2008 violent crime in Raleigh increased 5.69%. There was however a spike in the first 6 months which is where that number NC Man posted. One has to also factor in growth (3.31% in 2008). Therefore in my eyes Raleigh's violent crime increased 2.38% in 2008.

All joking aside... isn't that the purpose (and appeal) of Cary/Apex/Holly Springs, that they've become the safe havens from crummy Durham and yucky Raleigh?

That's how I sees it, anywho.

This is actually one of the main factors why I sincerely hope the economy does not get real rough around the Triangle. Because I predict that if it were to ever get as bad economically here as say California, Las Vegas, Florida, or so on, this place would become a crime infested inferno.

There have been some horrific murders in the area - those that come to mind immediately are the international grad student at Duke and the president of the student body at UNC-CH.

And they were both committed by the same man. If the potential of becoming a victim of violent crime really worries anybody that much, than you definitely should never travel in a car. Traveling anywhere by car is by far the most dangerous thing anyone does on a daily basis.

Thanks Mike. I totally agree... Raleigh has had more crime numerically than Durham for years now. However what's the difference, when crime is still relatively low? Most of the violent crime taking place are amongst individuals who know each other. Are you hanging around gang members?

Durham is and will always be crime ridden no matter who is cooking the crime numbers. Fayetteville as well but not as bad as Durham.
