My wife has a craft project that she wants to work on this weekend. I'm looking for a tile store that will sell me a handful of loose tiles.
I don't want a place that is a showroom where you can only order tile to be delivered and I don't want a place that only sells tile if they do the installation.
A place like Home Depot or Lowes would work, but I want some place with a larger selection, especially of marble/travertine type tiles. Are there any tile "seconds and surplus" type stores around? I did a search of the forum and most posts were asking about tile installers and places to order larger amounts of tile. I called Best Tile this morning and they are only a showroom.
I live in southern Wake county, but don't mind driving to anywhere within Wake county. Thanks.
The Habitat store in Raleigh has tile, and if I recall there is a big bin/box outside, to the left of the doors, that has broken tile in it, for FREE. I remember seeing bits of marble/granite looking tiles in there. Inside they also have tile, of all types, but you can never predict what they have or how much.
Try the ScrapExchange in Durham (maybe too far), they have piles of misc tile in the back.
Also, go to new construction sites and dumpster dive. Whenever I need a few feet of 2x4, or a half-eaten burrito, that's what I do.
Thanks Bilirubin. I was hoping for something more tile specific as a I want a place with a large selection. I don't need broken tile. I need whole tile. . . . . 4x4 or even rectangular 4x5 or 4x6 would do. . . . and it needs to be marble/travertine. Since I only need a few tiles, I don't mind paying.
So I ended up buying a handful of tiles here, but it seemed to not be their normal mode of business. When you go in, you are in a typical tile showroom. I had to ask one of the sales people if I could buy just a few tiles. He took me to their warehouse attached to the showroom and asked permission for me to go in from the clerk behind the counter. The clerk had to come around and open a door for me to go into the warehouse. None of the tiles were marked with a price or name, they were just in cardboard boxes, and I had to buy at least a square foot (nine 4x4 tiles). I didn't know the price until I went back out front and the clerk looked them up on his computer.
I do mosaics and can tell you that the Habitat store has LOTS of tile...not just a few here and there, not just broken. There are usually boxes and boxes of tile. I guess people buy too much. Some times you have to buy a whole box, sometimes by the tile. I is a great place for what you are looking for.
The Tile Shop on Glenwood in Raleigh is a showroom but you can also purchase individual tiles.
They have some neat tiles.They have a sheet of small glass squares that I REALLY want to do my kitchen splash back in - but I can't convince hubby yet!
