I am new to this board and I will be moving down to Raleigh in the summer. I am hoping to find a teaching job, which I know will be tough based on reading previous posts, but I have a quick question about the schools in the area (Wake County and surrounding). I was wondering if schools use the reading and writing workshop models, or at least a balanced literacy approach to teaching reading and writing. I am currently getting my masters at Teachers College in NYC as a literacy specialist and the program is very focused on reading and writing workshops so I am hoping to find a school that uses these methods.
I recently moved to NC from LI where readers/writers workshops were HUGE! When interviewing here, I went on about it and how I would use it and the boss lady LOVED it. Little did I know-NO ONE uses it! We have ONE set of Lucy Calkins books in my school as a resource for everyone. My take is-not so big down here.
In my experience here, they love the idea of reading and writing workshops, but the way the curriculum is set up here, I have found it very difficult to implement. I used workshops for years and I haven't been able to start one this year (my first year teaching in Wake County)
