Hi! My husband and I are in our 20's and looking to get out of Michigan! We have considered some different states and like the sound of the Raleigh-Durham area in North Carolina. We are taking a 3-day trip this coming weekend and need some help forming an itinerary. Neither of us have been to North Carolina before, so any advice you can give would be of great help to us. We plan to visit 3 or 4 different cities, therefore, only leaving us with around a half of a day in each city.

We are interested in a safe, suburban area within approximately 20-30 minutes of downtown. We are looking to buy a home within the next year in a growing area with good home appreciation. We would like to be in a nice neighborhood and stay within the range of $140,000 to $170,000.

We would greatly appreciate it if you could recommend a handful of must-see residential areas that fit our description above. Also, if you have recommendations for places we should check out downtown - parks, shopping districts, etc - that would be great as well. Thank you in advance!

IMHO you are not going to find single family detached homes that meet your criteria in that price range.

If you don't mind a little longer drive, you may find a place. All depends on where you work - downtown Raleigh, downtown Durham, RTP, Chapel Hill, NCSU, or ????? More info would be helpful.

Yeah, alot will depend on where you work, when looking for something in that price range. (Especially if you only want single-family homes...if you're willing to look at townhomes or condos, your choices will go up dramtically.)

If you think you'll end up working in Raleigh, then I suggest south Raleigh & Garner as possible places for homes in that price range, while still having a short commute.

If you think you'll end up working in RTP or Durham, then I'd say check out northern & western Durham for good homes in your range, but still also close.

I was looking for a house in that price range too. We found our house in Clayton, there are several out here for that price. I think its about a half hour drive to downtown Raleigh, depending on where you live at in Clayton I guess. I think you can find a decent townhome for that price range (even less) in the Raleigh area. Also, hit up Garner. I think the prices were a bit higher, but if you look, you might find something.

Downtown Raleigh...hmmmm...you can't go wrong in downtown Raleigh. Its known more for its nightlife. Hit up Tir na nog for some good Irish food and awesome music. Flying Saucer for their different variety of beer. There are a lot of little shops if you just walk around. Also, try looking around citysearch11.com, they have some good touristy ideas as well.

The one thing I love the most about NC is you have the beach just a few hours away on one side, and the mountains heading in the opposite direction. You can't go wrong living here, its a beautiful state!

Good luck!!!

Look around the east side of raleigh where the new section of I540 just opened. You should be able to find a single family home in the area in your price range and be able to commute to RTP or downtown raleigh in 20 to 45 minutes.

Not to be totally dense... but what's considered the east side of Raleigh?

What S/D are in the area?
I'm unfamiliar with where the new section of I540 just opened.

I totally disagree that you can't find a suburban SFH in that price range 20-30 minutes from downtown Raleigh. Try:

Knightdale
NE Raleigh
East Raleigh
Fuquay Varina (I live in FV, it's very surburban and very safe and I can be downtown in 20 minutes, usually)
Clayton
Garner

We've been shopping for a home for almost 2 months now, started out looking for 3 bedrooms in the $175k range. That ended abruptly after we saw some homes.

Granted I haven't been out east - Knightdale, Zebulon - no offense intended at all but we just don't want to be out that direction.

Let me know of the areas in FV and Garner in the sub $175k price range, please!
