IBEW members are also in the communications field. Verizon in Durham (soon to be Frontier) employs IBEW workers. From what I can see - a bunch of those Vz folks who can retire before the transition to Frontier are doing just that due to concerns about the pension and 401K plans in the new company.

Yeah I would be concerned, Verizon is a great company to work for union and non union. Retiring from VZ doesn't mean you are retired from all union work does it?
Until residential and commercial building gets back up and running, the pickings will be slim. If you speak spanish that could help. I am seeing more and more spanish apprentices/crews so it is probably just a matter of time before they dominate the bulk of the work in that industry too.
I posted this about a year ago for my husband. Since then we have moved to north Raleigh. My husband still works in NYC in the electric union as a foreman and comes down every weekend. It is a struggle because we have 3 kids under 7. But nothing beats NY money! He did search for jobs but it wouldnt even come close to the money. The good thing is the NYC union has furlough which allows him to have off for 14 weeks a year. He starts that in about a month. At that time he will again try to find work.
Things are thin for electricians right now, much more so than usual. No one I have worked for will deal with the union, I won't either. IBEW does have an office on HWY 70, he might check with them. Better probably to check around with the major players here. Wayne J. Griffin, Watson, Bryant-Durham, Code Electric, Diverse Electric, etc. CLP is a temp service for electricians; they sometimes have some work when others don't.
