Another part of the problem is the Y not controlling access - meaning non members using the facilities.
Earlier this year an employee told me she has witnessed youth going from car to car to see if cars were locked or unlocked !
We've decided to cancel our daughter's membership when school begins - partly because she doesn't go.. and partly because I don't feel the Y is doing their part to remedy the situation - I was told they have no control over who hangs out in their parking lot..

I think this is the best way to deal with them if I were in your shoes... once they start losing members maybe they'll make better efforts toward safety. I still believe that leaving valuables unattended puts you at risk no matter what level of safety is enforced, but if what you describe is true then there are some things this place could be doing to make the environment safer for everyone (including kids that walk over from the nearby apartment complex).
