I am trying to find a school for a child with learning differences. I am looking for a school with small class size and more hands on learning. He is crashing in the wake county school system and I am very concerned. The children at Wendell Middle school are absolutely horrible towards him and I am concerned for his mental health from all the verbal abuse the kids are saying to him for being different. I am not a rich person so I am wondering what my options are. I am looking for a school that has a tuition of under $300/month for a child in middle school.

I'm sorry he is having a rough time!

I don't know of any schools that fit your requirements. However, you might want to talk to these folks for ideas: WCAS Welcome (http://www.wakecountyautismsociety.org/index.htm - broken link)

http://www.teacch.com/

I would recommend talking to the people at TEACCH. It's a free program for residents in NC and it's in Chapel Hill.... associated w/ UNC.

I'm so sorry to hear your child is having a hard time. Is there any way that his IEP can be modified to hold the school accountable? And if the behavior by the other students is bullying or borderline bullying then the school has to do something about it. Good luck! Your child is lucky to have a committed, caring parent!

I think it's really sad that some children can be so mean. I have a High Functioning Autistic child too. She finally got the IEP changed in November and after failing a few classes and not doing well, she has improved like day and night! I have not had her upset over any kids making fun of her at her current school in Wake County, but sometimes she is oblivious to certain things. I hope you can find some good info on school and for that budget. The only thing I have fun for schools is called the Mariposa School, but they are in Cary and I don't see on their website how they are nor an exact location. I think that is far from you. I would contact TEACCH as someone else suggested. The school Physchologist for my daughter spoke very highly about Teacch and the help and advice they can provide when my daughter was diagnosed this past November.

Default HFA Kids at Wake County

I am also looking for another option for my HFA daughter. Did you know that Wake County has 7 schools for the gifted and not one for kids like ours. Being in a classroom with 22 other kids that find it funny to torture our kids is nuts. We have to ban together and demand more out of them. You shouldn't have to pay for your child to be educated. They have a right to learn in an environment better suited for them. I am sick and tired of getting the run around. The IEP is a joke. So what, they give them a little extra time on a test, they can't even find extra text books for the kids to keep at home! A teacher cannot give the attention our children need no matter how dedicated they are. As our kids grow up there is no place for them to go. I have had enough. I am trying to shine a spotlight on this problem so if anyone has any idea's I'll all for it.

All the more reason to lobby your state representatives about passing the School Violence Prevention Act!

You are right. If they can have schools for the gifted why can't they have schools for children that need to be taught differently. Or allow vouchers so that we can send our kids to schools in Raleigh like Fletcher Academy that specialize in working with kids with ADD/ADHD. I know one person that because her child has an IEP she has tutors comes to her home to give her kids extra help - through the wake county school system. Is there a place that lists all the services available for IEP kids. It is so difficult to find information. Extra classes? Extra Services?

Yep..we bailed from public school in middle school for the same reason.
Would have been nice to have had a voucher since the public school was
failing to acommadate a disability. My son went from failing grades and trying to do 4 hours of homework every night to a strong B student and 1 hour of homework. He is now doing great in college.

I don't blame the teachers..they are overwhelmed. The system needs
to have better resourses for kids with special needs within classroom .

ADD kids are the ones they expect to take meds and not need anything more. I was told by a principle that once kids get on meds they
are just like every other kid and don't need any extra help.

Wow...that's pretty depressing. Reality is that the meds only work on maybe 70% of the kids.
