what's the difference between a PUR filter a Britta?
Sbanwan, where did you have your water tested?
For me, the PUR filters work better for my family and our residence. I used to use the faucet ones, but since we moved, they don't fit on our faucets anymore. We use the dispenser one that sits in the fridge. It's nice because my three y/o can get his own water by himself. I still miss filling up my gallon at the sink though because you get more than the dispenser will hold. Also, PUR ultimate cartridge filters more things than Brita if I'm not mistaken. Just go to the websites and find out which brand filter what to compare.
As for the water testing, I had that done too because I used to rent at an old complex, but everything came back okay. Call Durham One Call to ask about it. It's a lead test and you have to go pick up a kit and then bring it back. The one for South Durham is on 6605 Farrington Road (off Hwy. 54). It's free. They used to have an online form, but it's been removed. The number is (919) 560-1200
The place that is the worst for water is at Sutton Station in Durham. I can barely take a couple of sips when I dine out. It amazes me that some people can't taste it. I guess they just get used to it and think it is normal.

It is pretty normal. I'd bet that there wouldn't be much of a difference in preference evident in a blind taste-test between cold* Durham tap water and cold bottled water.
* I specify cold because warm bottled water gives off the smell and taste of the plasticizers in the bottle. Nasty nasty stuff that.
The only place where I can't drink the tap water is at the beach where you tend to pick up some sulfur and salt flavors.
I buy Crystal water gallon size in bulk at Costco and mostly drink that, but we also use tap water for when we make any other drinks (tea, lemonade, etc) and I don't notice any difference. I only really get the filtered because it is more convenient for storing and I don't like to use ice I also like to recycle my gallon jugs for gardening.. so it's pretty much a win win situation. But if it wasn't so cheap. I'd probably drink straight from the tap.
