Thanks everyone for the great input. I appreciate all the ideas. I agree about the online dating bit. It feels just like that.

Hi Liz,
I have tried a few meetup groups in my interests. I was told that the 'new comer' type groups don't last long/large turn over because basically the only thing you have in common is the fact that you are new. So go to a special interest group.

Anyways, the first one I tried was a group that had just started up. If you join a group you will get monthly e-mails of all the new groups--new ones are starting all the time. I happened to like the first one I went to & been to the next monthly meetings & plan to keep going.
The second one, even though it was an interest of mine, I didn't 'click' with the others & have not gone back to that one---but, there are several others & may try a different one. I think meetups can be fun.

So far the people we have sociallized the most with since we have come down here are great couples we have met in a church we have been attending & my husbands job. Unfortunally the neighborhood we live in are people who we don't have a ton in common with (just at different stages in our lives), but, I agree with what is said above...I cannot take a walk without a neighbor striking up a conversation--nice people.

We moved here 10 years ago and did not know a soul. We found it really easy to get to know people and make friends b/c so many other people were in the same situation. We joined book clubs(me), sports teams (kids & DH), church, school, neighborhood groups, etc. I'm sure you will have no problem once your settled in here.

[SSSHHH!] Don't tell my son about the dogs... He is TERRIFIED of dogs. If he hears that everyone is taking their dogs to all of the parks in the Triangle area, we'll never get him out of here!
