I have some friends who will be staying in Chapel Hill Friday night. Would like to find a decent bar/restaurant to go to. Preferably something with local beers. Any ideas?

This place seems nice. If the weather were nicer you could even sit outside and have a view of Franklin Street.

Welcome to the Top!

I don't get down to the main drag of Franklin Street much any more, but Spanky's is a classic, and best food of the Chapel Hill bars and has a decent beer selection. Top of the Hill is OK and make's its own beer. Food is pricey for a bar. Bub Omalleys has a great beer selection, never ate there. Early in the evening these spots will be mostly adults, and after 10 they'll be overrun with rugrats.

Carolina brewery is towards Carrboro. Food is OK, they make their own beer and it is decent. Best place to go is Tyler's in Carrboro. Great beer selection, food is OK. These spots remain mostly adult late into the evening

Tyler's Taproom in Carrboro is always fun and you could hang outside at Weaver afterward.

Toodie and Omamia nailed it. I totally forgot about Tylers. That is where I would go.

All those are great suggestions. You might also try He's Not Here just because and late night grub at TimeOut. Both are old school longtime Chapel Hill traditions.

I can't recommend on the beers, but for restaurants, Elaines is very nice. 411 is nice/casual (related to 518 West in Raleigh, I believe). The Lantern is a nice off-beat restaurant as well - especially fun (and a bit more casual) to eat in the bar in the back if there's space.

Top of the Hill and Carolina Brewery are both local beer options on Franklin St. Tyler's is great for its world beer selection.

For food, I'd go to Crook's Corner - not as expensive as Elaine's but still good and local.

Friday night is mid-ACC tourny so bars will be busy.

It's also going to be cold and rainy. So unfortunately it won't be much fun eating outside.
