where is a good (read: less expensive) place to buy plantation shutters and other window treatments? I've called Budget Blinds and have an estimate from them. Anybody else?

The Louver Shop. Cheaper and better quality (read: real wood) than Budget Blinds on plantation shutters. About the same cost on blinds.

Contact telephone number for the local franchise is: (919) 850-9575‎

I believe they service the entire Triangle area.

I was very pleased with All Phase Blinds- I priced out 3 different places. They came, measured and installed. Also, they made sure that they matched the exact shade to my trim color.

We were very pleased with Best Blinds of Raleigh. Someone else dropped the ball after we had waited 90 days!!!! so we called them and they came out quickly, took careful measurements and knew we had been waiting forever so they rushed the job. I think they are very competitively priced, you could always get a free quote. John and Judy Ogden (franchisees?) 919-854-4575. Very nice people. I think the website is Best Blinds.

I was very impressed with Blind and Shutter Pros they did our whole house and provide a great warranty. They build the shutters in Charlotte, custom paint them to match your trim and install. Great warranty too. They are NOT the cheapest though, they ended up being the mid-range price of the four we called. BUT, I could definately tell the quality difference between them. They also do Honeycomb shades, blinds (again custom color), verticals, Hunter Douglas products, etc. www.theblindandshutterpros.com and 215-1459

I would think twice about buying plantation shutters. I loved the fact that my home came with them and now I curse them all the time. I spend way too much time dusting them. Unlike pleated shades that pull up tight, the plantation shutters are a magnet for dust.

We used Best Blinds as well and were pleased with the service. They were reccomended to us by a neigbor & they have done several homes in our neigbhorhood as well.

I chose the Plantation Shutters for the bedrooms. I like the fact they block light very well and keep it darker than blinds. I also have half shutters on the windows around my breakfast nook with valances on top.

We've never had that problem. We do clean them occasionally, and a feather duster gets run over them quickly on a regular basis, but I don't find that they otherwise appear dusty or dirty, or that they're too much work to maintain.

This has not been my experience. I've had plantation shutters in my home for 7+ years now and have not experienced excessive dust as mentioned here. But when doing my household dusting, I include the plantation shutters, which are very easy to dust.
