Pardon me if this is a silly question, but I've searched the real estate listings for the Raleigh area, and can't seem to find any "rural" areas, i.e. house with 5-10 acres, or something like that. Do areas such as this exist near Raleigh, or is it all subdivisions? How far out would I need to go to find a home with land that is not in a subdivision?

How far out of the city do you want to be?

We are planning our first visit to Raleigh in a few weeks, so I'm a little bit in the dark right now, but I would say that our price point is up to $300,000, and that we would want to be within 20 miles of Raleigh. We're not looking for a high-end home, but something with some property.

Try Chatham County around Pittsboro maybe?

You will have to go 15 to 30 miles from downtown Raleigh to have a selection.

Eastern Wake County has a couple.

You often see large lots with mobile homes on them, so that may be a consideration for you, whether you would live in a mobile home.

You can do it in closer than 25 miles if you can live with limited choices.
at 25 mile radius, some interesting stuff pops up on the MLS.
But.... That is "as the crow flies." Might be a 35 mile drive.
But there was land up to 31 acres represented down towards Smithfield and Selma.

FWIW:
The Triangle MLS breaks down property size from 3 to 5.9 acres, and then 5.9-10.9 acres, then 11+.
We can't seek 5 acres and up cleanly, but have to weed through the stuff that is under 5 acres.
PITB...

Although I have run across a couple in Wake Forest and Youngsville and Clayton, you may want to refine your search to include Franklin, Granville and Johnston COUNTIES.

Most should be between 20 to 30 min. back to Raleigh, depending on where in the county and where in Raleigh you'd like to be.

This isn't our "typical" buyer so you may have to search a bit harder.
