Hi, I'm new to the area and am searching for local bars that have live bands playing cover songs. I have been able to find live music in Chapel Hill, but these are usually local bands playing their own music. Nothing against that, but sometimes my hubby and I like to listen to something familiar...classic to current rock type stuff. Anyone out there know of any places like this? Preferably in Chapel Hill/Durham, but I am not opposed to driving out to Raleigh every so often. Thank you!

I don't know about cover bands, but check out Cat's Cradle in Carrboro.

Wild Wing Cafe (in Brier Creek) has cover bands every Friday and Saturday night. They start at 10pm. It's in Raleigh, but close enough to Durham.

The Breakfast Club (80s pop cover band) are playing at The Lincoln Theater in Raleigh on Saturday. Their shows are always a blast.

Default Good question

Places like Cats Cradle and Local 506 host mostly bands performing original music. Every now and then you get a cover band, but they typically appeal to a certain niche and oftentimes just emulate one band. Examples that come to mind are Who's Bad? (Michael Jackson), Zoso (Zeppelin), Badfish (Sublime), Two Step (Dave Matthews) and the aforementioned Breakfast Club (general 80s).

Some of the bars in Chapel Hill will have live bands, and more of these groups play mixed covers than the bands at the music venues (though still some originals). This includes East End Martini Bar, Coffee Shop, He's Not Here, The Library, Top of the Hill...and I'm sure some others that I can't think of right now. None of these places have live music every night though. Also, they're all on Franklin Street with steps of each other, so you may be able to just head down there on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday and figure out where the music is coming from.

If you go out to Raleigh, Napper Tandy's brings in pretty good cover bands.

We hired Sugar the Band (their site) for our wedding and they have started doing some of their own stuff but they started out a cover band. They are beginning to go by The Design now and are in Raleigh the majority of the time playing at Wild Wings.

I saw them recently at Wild Wings and they were really good. I cannot believe how packed it was there though and everyone was saying it was the busiest they had ever seen it. We waited in line forever to get in and it was freezing!

The Plaids are local to the Triad & Triangle area. I've seen them in Winston-Salem and they are absolutely fantastic - an amazing time! They play in Raleigh pretty frequently; their site is The Plaids – Greatest Hits of the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s – Wedding Band, Party Band, Clubs, College and Corporate - NC, SC, VA

I saw these guys on St Patty's day a few years ago in Greensboro and they were a lot of fun.
