I am sure you know not to go near Brier creek or crabtree creeks:
"The Neuse River Foundation is hosting a public meeting Thursday about the contamination, including an update on the cleanups at the Ward Transformer site and in the affected waterways: Little Brier Creek, Lower Brier Creek, Brier Creek, Brier Creek Reservoir, Lake Crabtree and Lower Crabtree Creek."
This article goes on to say
"According to EPA documents, the cleanup itself could take three to five months. However, it could take at least 14 years for PCB levels to decrease to "acceptable levels" in fish in Brier Creek Reservoir. In Lake Crabtree, PCB levels in fish aren't expected to reach those levels for nearly a decade."
Can anyone recommend one? I've been trying to find water test results from streams in Orange and/or Durham counties but I haven't been successful yet.
The Little River (accessible at Lil River Regional Park, up Guess Rd, a couple miles north of Mason Rd.-- just over the line out of n.w. Durham County/into Orange County) is a good, shallow creek to play in. It's about a 1 mile walk from the parking lot back TO the creek, but it's worth it. I would say 'watch out for crawfish' though, I think, as with any creek in the south, there are crawfish under crevisses and stuff. They're tasty boiled, but can nip fingers.
I'm not sure of the name of the creek, but also in Duke Forest off of Whitfield Rd. I caught many crawfish there.
Looks like New Hope Creek and/or Old Field Creek run through that part of Duke Forest. Looks on the map like these are fairly upstream legs...probably fairly clear/shallow?
Are you planning on having your kids drink the water? The creek you've been to in Schenck is, well, a creek. I guess I'm not understanding what you are looking for.
Fews ford on Eno (Eno River State park, off of Pleasant green road). Nice wide spot.
Old field creek...On the triangle land conservancy trails off Mt Sinai. There's a bridge that crosses the creek (about 5 ft wide), and there's a huge old sycamore tree on the banks that makes a great jungle gym.
New Hope Creek in Duke Forest between Mt Sinai and Whitfield.
WOW! Not sure I would dip my kids, though I don't currently have any, in any creek around here. Heck even the ocean waters are getting suspect due to run off. Find yourself a pool. There are tons of trails with great views of streams, creeks and pond, but dipping your kids in them is highly suspect in my opinion.

There are deep parts and shallow parts, and it can be clear, it just depends on the section and how much rain we have gotten. There are actually some nice fishing holes down near the cliffs.
