Hello board. Sorry for my lack of knowledge on the public schools system in the immediate Raleigh area but I have a few questions.

1) Does all the towns around Raleigh area have Magnet schools?

2) If not which towns have their own school system?

3) Can you give me some info on how far a child can be bussed to school?
How is this determend?

Thanks in advance.

All of the towns in Wake County (including Raleigh, Wake Forest, Cary, Garner, Fuquay, Apex, Knightdale, Holly Springs, Wendell, Zebulon, and I'm probably missing one or two others) are part of the same (huge) school system. Anyone in the county can apply to magnet options. The magnet selection process is complicated and has nothing to do with a student's abilities - I would not count on getting into a magnet.

Other school systems in the Triangle region include Durham (includes city and county of Durham); Johnston County (includes Clayton, Smithfield, Selma, etc); Chapel Hill-Carborro; Orange County; Chatham County. I don't know about the magnet programs in these systems.

About bussing, kids are more likely to be bussed long distnaces in Wake County than the others, but I don't remember what the official "limit" is.

Like many southern states, school systems in NC are primarily county based. A few larger cities used to have their own school systems, but most were merged with their county counterparts in the 1970s. An exception is the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, which remain separate from the Orange County school system.

Not really, but I think that depends on how you define "around Raleigh". You have to look at a different county such as Johnston, Durham, Orange, Chapel Hill schools and Granville County to get out of the WCPSS. Depending on which "side" of that county you live in, you could be considered "around Raleigh" (30 minute drive from some of them).
