If you're working in or near RTP, then Woodcroft in South Durham meets your requirements nicely. I have seen several houses that went up for sale quite recently not too far from my street. The construction is not new, but there is a nice variety of architectural styles and house sizes, plenty of mature landscaping (it's GREEN right now!) and shopping/dining on all four sides of the neighborhood.
I work in RTP and a "bad" commute is 15 minutes. It's usually more like 10 mins door to door.

That's my neighborhood! Look at "Discover Brentwood" slide show on Beautiful Brentwood - a neighborhood in Raleigh. Has larger lots and lots of mature trees and bushes. Convenient to everything.
