close to both. Crime can be high anywhere downtown and the areas immediately adjacent to the schools can have problems, but you do not have to live in those to go to one of the scools. I cannot say anything about the educational merits but you can research that online. For that matter, you can get crime rates from the Raleigh police department.
Depending on your major and plans for a job, going to a larger, better known school can have advantages over schools like Shaw and St. Aug.
St. Aug is considered a private college so tuition wld be slightly higher there, not sure if Shaw is. I've had friends who went to St. Aug one who hated it, the other loved it! The one who loved it was their on basketball shcolarship. But thats all I can say. Crime in both of those areas happen. Around Shaw they have updated some of the houses immediately surrounding the school. There's still a few boarded up. St.Aug the areas around the school are kind of run down and not really updated.
I wish I had more information on what you are looking for. I have known people that have been gone to both school and mixed reviews on both.
Are you specifically looking for a HBCU? If so, I would consider a public university, like NCCU. I am from Raleigh and never considered going to either partly due to the cost of tuition. If you have a scholarship that is a different story.
Out of the 2 I definitely prefer Shaw.
I would suggest driving through neighborhoods of both schools to get an idea of the surrounding areas for the schools.
I work at NCCU and would highly support this as an public (lower cost) HBCU in the Triangle. We have some excellent program and some newer facilities and some not so excellent program and older facilities but think that we use all we have to the advantage of our student population (we have a higher amount crime in our area as well)
