The recent thread regarding development in North Raleigh near the Falls Lake area got me thinking about other lakes in the area.
Falls Lake is a drinking water source for Raleigh, right? I suppose that's why they've defined the watershed rules. . . . so the drinking water doesn't get contaminated.
Are there any other lakes in the Raleigh metro that have watershed development limitations?
How can you find out just how far the watershed area extends? I think that I read somewhere that the underground water table flows north towards Falls Lake and the area north of I540 is in the restricted area.
Jordan Lake is also a big watershed area, with some construction restrictions as well. If you look at some maps, you'll notice there's a big chunk of the southern edge of Durham county where there's almost no development, as well as large parts of eastern Chatham County.
Also, all creeks and tributaries of the Neuse River Basin (including Falls Lake, Crabtree Creek, Eno River, Walnut Creek and tons of others) as of 1998 have "buffer" restrictions, meaning the vegetated/wooded areas within 50 ft of the streambanks are protected.
