I love older homes with character in a neighborhood where the trees are taller than the houses. Are there any neighborhoods like this in Apex, or very close to Apex? If not, are there any "newer" housing developments in Apex that don't feel "new" i.e. lots of trees, walkable etc.? Have small children so schools are important. Price range up to $250K. Thanks for any advice / info.

Knollwood dates from the 1970's, and has a lot of split-levels, 2 stories and ranchers.

Nearby in Cary is a great selection of 1970's and 1980's homes. Maybe not old enough for you, but from a time when they worked around some majestic trees.
Highlands, Scottish Hills, Madison Oaks, Oakwood Heights, Trapper's Run, Oxxford Hunt, Hampsted Manor, Wood Hollow, Dutchess Village, Edgehill Farms come to mind quickly.

All of the above have the nice large lots and great shade trees.

Note: You should bear in mind that you will not find much historic housing.
Apex has nearly quadrupled in size in less than ten years, and Cary was population 4,000+/- in 1970, and has increased to 120,000 today. Ergo, "old" is anything over 20 years old...

Hope this helps.
