Anyway to the OP, I had no idea owners could administer the shots themselves. This is great info. Having just spent $2k on my dog as well after taking a 40% pay cut I am also looking to shave some costs. If I can do it just as well as the vet but at a fraction of the cost I am open to ideas! Thanks for posting this.
Many people give their own vaccinations to their animals. I have friends that own a horse farm, who did all their own vet work period, because there was no large animal vet that would travel to their farm (which is in a town that is also home to an NC University)...they were "too far away".
The way I look at it, they could just neglect to give the vaccinations, but they are looking at options to care for their animals in this tough climate. Doesn't mean their animals are suffering...just means they are trying to save some money. I personally am having my puppy spayed through SNAP - NC...they will do it for $100, and my vet will charge $350. Same surgery, performed by an equally educated vet, why should I pay more? Again, I could just let it go, but my puppy was a rescue from under the neighbor's house...has had all her shots (at the vet)...but so much more for a spay, doesn't make sense to me. I have a child that wants to go to college too!
By the way Bay, I can afford to care for my pets. I just cannot see paying the vet $48 to administer a $6 shot when it can be done just fine at home.
Can you understand this rational??
Vets now a days seem to charge as much as a human doctor and its a rip off.
Just wanted to add...for people who have lost their jobs or are low income, or receive Medicaid, there is a $20 spay/neuter program available called The $20 Fix.
I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to do this, but if you do do them yourself, how do you prove when you board or groom your dogs that they are up-to-date w/ vaccinations? Just curious.
SLS...Our kennel does not accept owner-given vaccinations unless the owner is a vet. They have no way to guarantee that the vaccines have been given and don't want to expose the other animals to possible health threats.
Our boarder just asks when her vaccinations were given, and of course she has to have her rabies tag. I don't think they all require actual proof of vaccination, though some might.
