I don't live in Cary, but as many know we had some wild weather yesterday, it comes with any territory you live in...just wanted to share the link I posted in weather...The pics were taken at my home in Knightdale on 5-5-09, as there were no confirmed reports of a tornado in Knightdale, it was pretty scary for a bit...Have a great day and keep safe everyone
I hope there is no damage either. Let us all hope the twisters stay technically classified as funnel clouds, at least 6 feet off the ground. As was pointed out and implied over and over on this thread, this way we having nothing to worry about.
We should all hope if we get funnel clouds / tornadoes, they all stay at least 6 feet off the ground, so as not to be officially declared a tornado. This way, even if it comes right through your home, you can squat down real low like and be safe as kittens.
But wait! The national weather service is still analyzing yesterday's activity and may classify the four rotations as tornados. So we still have a waiting period to see, if the implied assesment was correct. At the time of the actual event, the activities in question were indeed reported as tornados.
It was dark, it was stormy, the weather people on TV went crazy and took over for hours, reports were varied, we Cary people made it through, the poor NCSU belltower got struck by lightning, people east of here got the worst of it. Meanwhile, we make fun of Cary and argue over who or who didn't get a tornado. **sigh, from me too**
"0635 PM TORNADO 3 SSE CARY 35.75N 78.77W
05/05/2009 WAKE NC FIRE DEPT/RESCUE"
Score:
56,458 for CarolinaCowboy
2 for the people that don't matter, as their facts are always wrong
Technically the weather service didn't say there was a tornado in that statement...they were just relaying the observations a trained spotter w/ the Wake NC Fire Dept/Rescue observed.
The N&O cleared this up in an article (http://www.newsobserver.com/news/story/1516989.html - broken link) this morning:
"It's possible multiple funnel clouds twirled in the sky over Wake, Johnston, Wilson and Nash counties Tuesday during the chaotic storms that struck the area, but there may have been just two tornadoes that actually touched down and did any damage.
That was the conclusion of a team of National Weather Service experts who drove to areas where damage was reported Wednesday, then compared what they saw with radar images and other data.
A likely explanation for the deluge of tornado reports was that several were sightings of, or damage from, the same twister, said Darin Figurskey, a meteorologist in the weather service's Raleigh office.
. . .
Among the reported tornadoes that could not be confirmed was one in Cary near U.S. 1.There didn't appear to be damage there, and apparently there were no photos showing that it actually reached the ground."
I think the one in Cary may be a case of "If a tree falls in the woods but no one hears it..." It's possible that it was there, but without physical proof like tree damage or a picture, no one can confirm.
I believe the origin of the Cary report (U.S. 1 & Cary Parkway) was made by the Fire Department.
