Does anyone know who puts irrigation systems in residential yards? It takes me forever to water my plants and I am sure I am wasting water. Thanks for your help.

Need one too. Also wondering about the deal with Raleigh requiring a separate meter.

We used Huntscapes in Raleigh. They did a great job and charged a reasonable rate (roughly $500/zone). The company we had maintenance it told us it was one of the better installed systems he'd seen in the neighborhood.

ETA: I'm not sure about the separate water meter in Raleigh, but in Cary it pays for itself because you are not charged sewer charges on the water you use for irrigation. It cost me about $700 (I think it's higher now) and I'm pretty sure it paid for itself in the two years we were in our home.

We had one put in by Francis Landsaping last year. We avoided the extra meter by going with a 1700 gallon in-ground cistern tied into our gutter downspouts. When full it provides enough water for about 5 watering cycles for our 1/4 ac. lot. The upfront costs were obviously a bit more (but not too much) however now we are not tied into the city water for irrigation and thus not subject to gov't-mandated water restrictions. Also, the water we use is natural rainwater and the pH and lack of chemicals is much better for our grass and plants!

If just watering plants, you do not need a full irrigation system - you can get by with a drip system that works off your hose bib. Drip systems use less water and by dripping water to the plants, forcing the roots to grow down instead of across and in the long run the plant needs less water.

Most cities require permits and a second water meter for full systems - which runs anywhere from around $1200 to as high as $4500 in Creedmoor. Then you need to pay for the system - which runs about $500 a zone and most homes are in the 6-8 zone requirements,

If interested in this type of system, PM me for more details.

If you don't mind could you mention around home much that system cost to have installed?

That's an awesome idea. Thanks for sharing, I would never thought of doing that. Anything that saves money and takes me off the "grid", the better.
