1) Ones you want around
2) Ones you don't want around.
This is one you want around. It is non-poisonous and probably eats other snakes. It is either a rat snake (usually just called a black snake around here) or a black racer. Check Needcaffeine's link for descriptions of both. Snakes of North Carolina
(Don't think it is a Coachwhip, though. They live east of here.)
We have one now, up in a hole in one of our trees. Last year the same kind of snake was there, with at least 3 baby snakes. They would lean out of the hole and catch the sun. I wonder if they were the reason our squirrel population went down for awhile? The hole did house 3 or 4 squirrels, before the snake(s) arrived. Seems that after the snakes moved out, (I think they were around for a couple of weeks), it took some time before we saw squirrels again. Love to get the binoculars and look at the hole. It's way up in a very big tree, but we have a prefect view of it! It's also been home to a very large, "Woody" Woodpecker! Haven't seen him much this year.
I wonder what the snake thought? Probably slithered home shed its skin tossed back a few rats and said let me tell you about my day..... I seen these large figures that were staring at me like I had arms and legs and hair..........Man and they say we are scary!?
