Has anyone adopted from the NC foster care system? If so, how was your experience?

My SIL did...it went surprizingly smooth for them. They fostered several older kids, but then a 6 month old baby came to them...and they adopted within a year with no drama. He is now 10, but I doubt things have changed that much.

Of course, they were willing to take a bi-racial child with possible hearing loss due to multiple ear infections. (His hearing is fine though.)

Thanks for the information Zoya. Did they have to go through a contracted agency or adopted directly from the county's social services department?

They dealt only with the county's social services. It was in Mecklenburg County though....not the Triangle - Wake/Durham/Orange.

My sister's close friend fostered children. Her husband had a business, so she was able to stay at home with the children. Amazing family, they have 4 biological children, and (now) 2 adopted children (they are biological siblings) and one foster child they hope to adopt one day. Anyway, I think they only had problems adopting the one sister, b/c the mother was trying to get the child back. Due to her history however, I know they eventually terminated her rights. ...
I wish you the best of luck. It takes a special person to be able to open their heart and home to children in need. I hope you are able to adopt without any complications!

Thank you BDavis. It'd be nice to spend 15-20K to adopt a baby from a private adoption agency. However, I cannot in good conscience spend that much money when there are many kids out there in the foster system waiting to be adopted. I know there may be some challenges but there are no guarantees with a privately adopted baby either. I am keeping my fingers crossed and see what's out there.

We have three adopted children and I fear your estimate of $15-20 K is very much on the low side. At least in my experience. Good luck

Oh my goodness!!! Why do you think it costs so much to adopt a baby? Does majority of the money go to the birth mother? It's just a shame that childless people have to pay so much to become parents. It's already hard enough to know that you will never be able to share your genes, but you have to sell your arm and leg to be able to parent a child is just outrageous. Thank goodness there are other options for us.

PS...this is NOT an anti-adoption agency thread...was just venting

I have friends who fostered through orange county and ended up adopting a baby they were fostering. The process seemed to go very quickly for them, as soon as they were approved for fostering, they had a child with them.

I think the difficulty comes when the parents are able to regain their parental rights (which is always the goal of the fostering program), and it can be very tough on the family providing the foster care.

My guess is she is referring to private adoptions. I understand private adoptions can be expensive, and the fees typically cover the attorney fees and prenatal and delivery expenses.
