Just to be clear, I'm not so squeamish about pain as I am about cost. It would be great to find a dentist without all the bells and whistles who just does good, honest work. Usually I get my dental work done out of the country where it's much cheaper and still decent quality, but after a couple of years since my last dental visit (grad student and don't have dental coverage), I'm experiencing a toothache and am more dreading the cost of a visit than any sort of drilling, poking or prodding. Anyone know of a dentist in the area that will do no nonsense work at a reasonable cost? Thanks so much!

We go to Karen Petty. She's on Millbrook Rd. in Raleigh. She is very nice and the prices seem reasonable. I have decent dental insurance, but even for the stuff that isn't covered (sealants) her prices seem reasonable.
Her number is 875-1630.

If you have a bit of time and don't need quick appointments, I'd consider going to a dental school clinic if there are any in the area. Most times the work is free or close to free, and professors are overseeing all of the work done (or stepping in themselves). The only problem is that appointments are usually 3 hours long

This sounds ok by me. I have plenty of literature to bring and read. Anyone clued in on where these could be? They're offering dental insurance next school year and I plan on taking it.

Update: UNC has one, but they do a "drawing" once a month. Wow, I suppose many are looking for cheap/effective no frills care like myself

Try Wake Smiles. I heard they have a low cost program there.
I can't believe UNC is only doing a monthly draw, that's crazy!

Is this the one on New Bern Rd. or the one in Wake Forest? Thanks!

Check out DentalPlans.com

Dental Insurance Alternative – Discount Dental Plans for Individuals and Groups

You pay a one time annual flat fee to join for an individual or family. Then you can select from a variety of dental plans to choose from on a discounted fee-for-service basis.

There are no monthly premiums to pay and you'll know going in how much it's going to cost for whatever service or procedure you need to have done.

This might be a good alternative for people who don't want or can't afford monthly insurance premiums but will still give them access to lower cost dental services.

Those low cost quasi dental insurance deals are no deal at all. The Dr list is small, they charge inflated rates and our experience is they do a poor job. We did this once, DW got a crown, they put it on backwards and has never been right -always sensitive, new dentist has shaved it for some relief. We figured we have paid same price (insurance + fees) if we'd gone to a good dentist & paid out of pocket.

Always wanted to try Dental Works -they advertise all the time as low rates.

Sorry, the only one I know of in the area is UNC I only know about them because my husband worked in one the last two years of his dental school career, and I used to go see him for free!
