Unfortunately, very common in apartment communities, no matter where you are. Multifamily communities are a theif's playground. I've worked in communities in the area (upscale at that) where 14 were broken into in a night, so 14 in a week in an entire town doesn't really shout "alarming new trend" to me. It does stink though. But it can be easily averted by leaving valuables out of sight and locking your vehicle.
I'm Community Watch captain and am frequently in the community gym between 2 and 6 AM. Very few breakins mostly encouraged by valuables left in view.
I keep nothing of value in my 08 Corolla and don't lock it during the day. My tire gauge is cheaper than a window.
When are they going to build a wall, fence or a moat around this place to keep the crime out?
Sorry, none of these meet HOA regulations.
