Moving to Durham and trying to choose cable or satellite TV

My parents live in Durham. They've had Direct TV for at least 8 years. The picture rarely goes out, less than it did with cable... My dad will never go back to TWC. Their service was HORRIBLE.

They were using Verizon DSL. But my mom is able to work from home now so she switched service to Roadrunner and they gave her a bad wireless router. Took them 2 weeks to get the problem fixed. While the technicians were polite, most were pretty clueless. My dad is still not happy and is looking at other options for her.

I think direct TV requires minimum 2 year contract? I might only stay one year in Raleigh but still want to choose direct TV for better sports package.

Yep 2 year contract, but you can move and take the recievers and have the service setup elsewhere if you move. Better sports packages and MUCH more HD content.


TWC tried to get me a "lower" price for not leaving by tryign to get me to sign up for a 2 year contract when I told them I would leave them if they couldn't figure out why our picture goes out all the time, he said the only thing we can do on the price is to have you sign a 2 year contract. Sign a contract for crappy service? No thanks. There is a reason TWC's retention department is working massive OT hours right now....

Another thing to keep in mind is picture quality, if you're going HD. Cable has to compress the heck out of their transmission, and so in many cases you don't get nearly as sharp a picture as you do with satellite.

We noticed the difference right away when we got DirecTV.
