Does your DVR hard drive spin constantly? We just got one yesterday and it has not stopped spinning yet! The entire system has been completely off since 11 pm last night. The unit is getting very hot--duh--and I do dread having to call "customer service" about it. Is there some setting we're missing (power saver mode or suchlike) or do I have to call and tell TWC to give us a different piece of junk, er, DVR?

Oh, it's a Scientific Atlanta 8240HDC.

You will end up having to take it back to the depot on Atlantic Avenue ( take copy of recent bill) and they will exchange . It's probably an old unit. After going thru the CS thing for for half an hour thats what happened to me
Hope that helps

Ours makes a lot of noise. It's in our bedroom so it's kind of annoying. Yours sounds worse than ours tho.

Okay, that does help because I was afraid that maybe our local TWC was doing some kind of all-night update to their units. Nice to know that's not the case so I can be more forceful on the phone!

Same here, except for a 1 or 2 second "whirr" when it turns on.

If you want an alternative to renting TWC's poor quality DVRs, instead try buying a good-quality DVR from Panasonic or Sony and saving money in the long term to boot.

Panasonic DVD Recorders and more DVD players from Panasonic

What I want is a hard drive DVR that doesn't record on removable media (DVD).

Can't seem to find one anywhere w/o stuff like TWC and TiVo add.

Just a VCR with a hard drive.

You're going to need some interface to manage the programming and recording. You can do it through your TV service (TWC, Tivo, etc.) or through a computer. One simple option with a computer, for example, would be a PC with a TV tuner running Windows Media Center (or embedded in Windows 7).
