The vision care is not great (one eye exam a year, one set of lenses per year, but new frames only every 2 years. With contacts, I only got 1/2 year supply????) The extra dental is decent though. I've lived in NC for 2 years and have had trouble finding a primary care doctor through the Duke system. (I'm not sure if it would make a big difference with BCBS though...) Duke has a phone number you can call to find out which docs are accepting new patients, but whenever I call the docs they recommend, the docs are actually NOT accepting new patients. I guess their database is not kept up-to-date. It is, however, easy to find specialists and I've been happy with them. Just my two cents...
I actually had BCBS NC prior to moving to Duke, and I thought they were more picky (had to fight hard for certain scripts or procedures to be covered) and more expensive on a monthly basis. As far as finding a doctor, any of the Duke Clinics would be worth trying, I would just call someone in your area.... I go to Sutton Station, and have been very happy with them, get an appointment quickly and have gotten referrals very quickly as well. The Southpoint location is huge, so they likely have a doctor you could see... Hope this helps !

Duke's costs have gone up and have passed them on to their employees. I pay about $400 dollars a month for me, my Wife and daughter, she is 20 months. I moved here last year, and the health insurance costs here are deplorable. I was a Philadelphia Municiple employee and paid 0! per month. The University of Pennsylvania, which is pretty comparable to Duke offers employees a discount for being taken care of at their medical facilities.

I had Duke Options for about 4 years and just switched to Duke Select. I've been happy with both so far. There are multiple Duke sites all around the Triangle so you can usually find a place to go. For instance, there is the Urgent Care/Primary Care in Morrisville, OB/GYN in both Durham and Brier Creek area, etc. Even when I had Duke Options (and had the option to go outside of the Duke system) I didn't so I didn't see the point in paying more. Plus, the OB coverage is much cheaper with Select and that was a major factor in my switching over. I agree that it can be hard to find a primary care doctor but I find that everyone in my neighborhood has that problem, no matter who their insurance is with. Bottom line, we have so many great medical options in this area (Duke only being one of them) that you can find someone you like - it just may take a couple visits. If it's important for you to be able to see providers with other affiliations (UNC, Wake, etc) then Options may be better. If not, go cheaper and pick Select.

Being a Duke Employee and paying what I am paying for the insurance, which has gone up to $355 not including dental and optical, is ridiculous. Duke's hr/health insurance is no help and they will not always pay claims if you go to a non duke facility, even if it is in network.

how is it so expensive for you guys? I have Duke Basic and I pay like $20/month or something. It has served my needs just fine. I am a single and healthy 24 year old, though. I don't require much.

Its the family vs individual plan, and different coverages/deductables/coinsurance. Duke Basic for a family is $225/month, and Select is $355/month. Your plan is perfect for a healthy 24 year old, just set aside some of what you are saving in case have to pay deductibles/coinsurance.
