I lived in the Bay Area for 8 years. I have to agree with one of the other posters about other wine areas. Sonoma County is also known for wonderful wines and the entire area is less crowded (at least it was many years ago) than Napa. The owners are usually right there to take you on a tour vs. just some hired help. The area is beautiful--Jenner and the Russian River recreation area being not far away. Hwy 29 can be bumper to bumper so you need to plan at least 2-3 hours to get about 10 miles (with stops).
However, if the restaurant is still there, Mustard's is unbeliveable. One of the best meals I ever had. I think it's in St. Helens.
Also, Calistoga is a very nice, funky little town.
