If I seem to remember a story on NPR or in the Independent on raw milk in Orange County. As long as you own your own cow its legal, and there's some small farmers in the area selling shares of cows. Maybe the chapel hill creamery or maple view farms can point you in the direction of who's doing this?

Hormone free and local milks are available at Harris Teeter (not that expensive), and you can check to see if you have any coops nearby such as Weaver Street Market which is opening up in Hillsborough. also try http://www.localharvest.org/organic-farms/ for other resources.

(It's sold in the clear glass bottles with the colored caps)

They make good ice cream too!!!

We are picky milk connoisseurs. We too balked at the milk selection here in NC UNTIL we discovered Maple View Farm sold at Harris Teeter. Love their milk! Last weekend we made the pilgrimage out to their store in Hillsborough. It's very quaint & their ice cream is a great treat. Plus the store sells local items like scented handmade soap made of goats milk from a farm down the road. Not to mention it's beautiful out there. It's a popular road w/ bicyclists too. Great little trip for the family. I hear they do bluegrass concerts in the summer. I'm keeping an eye on the website for that info.

There are also a variety of online and NC resources for finding organics or hormone free milk. When we first got to NC, I called a number of further out in NC dairy/chicken/egg places...all seemed eager to have a reason to deliver to the Triangle area. I haven't had the time to look into it further. This organization puts out a listing by county (NC/SC).

Then there's the localharvest.org someone mentioned, and eatwild.

You might also want to contact, North Carolina Raw Milk
