Hi,

My job is transferring to Raleigh and I have a wife and 3 young kids. Which surrounding areas would be nice to raise a family? I will more than likely rent, just to get a feel for the area. Oh, my salary is only 50k. So we will be living off my salary until my wife finds employment.

Lots of great areas and a few not so great...how far do you want to drive?
What is important to your family as far as having things to do in the neighborhood?

More details please...

$1000/month range will get you a reasonable 3 bedroom older home in Cary where you can hang out for a year while you learn your way around.

I guess we have diff definitions of "reasonable." I'm thinking it'll cost more than that.

But then again I found "I 'only' make 50K" kind of an odd comment too (ie 50K isn't so "only"), so I guess it's all subjective.......

50K isn't a huge salary to support a wife and three kids. For instance, it probably results in about $2500/month take home and if your mortgage is $1000 (which is on the low side,) and then you factor in utilities, phone, cable, food, gas, preschool costs, kids activities - you can not afford it all!!! It's insane how much money you actually do need to make to support a very moderate (i.e. One activity per kid, no vacations, no huge luxuries) lifestyle.

Apex, Morrisville, Holly Springs, Cary. All within decent driving, great for families, and if you can keep your eyes out there are good deals for rentals. I'd also suggest getting in touch with a buyers agent to help you find some good rentals. We did that when we moved down and found a beautiful 4 BR TH in Apex for a very decent price.

GL!

......if you don't care about having a teeny tiny yard and/or being in semi-questionable areas, and/or renting houses that need some work, that is. esp a place big enough for a family w/3 kids. On that I stand firm as I searched the hell out of the entire Raleigh and surrounding areas earlier this year, including Wake Forest.

Good idea. Also check sites like rental.com etc.

"Think outside the box". You may prefer to look around the Fuquay area or south east of Raleigh. The above mentioned towns are high cost, traffic clogged and expensive and people think they are the 'in' places to live so you have a lot of competition. Sure they have plenty of fancy resturants, malls etc, but since you are looking for reasonable rentals for a family of five a little bit further to drive isn't a big price to pay to find something nice in your price range.

Exactly, 50k is not a lot ESPECIALLY for a 5 family home. I was thinking of a rental of 800 a month. We might have to struggle for a minute. So if anyone has a technical position open for 80k let me know..lol
