Just curious about commute times. Is a 40 minute commute considered too long 5 days a week or is this common around here. If you do commute that long, do you get used to it. What is the normal commute time for folks around here.

I have a 50 minute commute. I only work three days per week and that makes up for it.

I think the typical commute around here is 20-30 minutes. I would think 40 is way too long when there are so many options closer.

It depends on what you're used to and what you want. Before I moved here I had commutes that could range from 45 mins to 1 hour and I lived within the county that I worked in. My commute here is only 15 mins. If I moved to another city I could do 45 mins b/c I'm used it. Would I want to do a 45 min commute? No. But if I had do one b/c I could only afford the housing that is 45 mins from my job, I would do it without batting a lash.

Is your commute that long because of distance or traffic?

Nope, my commute time is now 25 minutes. I could move closer to family in the future, but it would put me at a 40 minute commute time. It would be distance and not traffic, since I'm not leaving the house or coming home during rush hour.

my commute is about 40 minutes if I leave during peak rush hour (before 6pm in evening and just after 8am in the morning). Outside that peak (leave say 7-8am and leave for home 6-7pm) it comes down to 30. Completely offpeak I can do it in 20-25. 40 minutes each way is a long time for me, I'm used to worse in big cities but you expect it more there. But I am out of town a lot here so it doesn't bother me that much. That said 540 is getting very heavy especially around the intersection with 70 in the evening and eventually it's going to get worse and worse. That 40 minutes is going to be an hour in a few years time and that might be when we change things round

Agreed! Around the Triangle area I have go to think 40 minutes is too long. In DC it was common (and longer than that), but that was because an hour commute would mean the difference between a $600k house and a $250-300k house (same size and style house). Around here you don't save as much money by living 40-60 minutes away to justify the commute time.
