Well, we're looking for a house in Pittsboro so not sure on that end. We're hoping to find something on the E/NE end of town.... and in Durham it would be near the 147/Ellis Rd area. That's why I'm wondering if the commute is going to be too much.

If far enough south that US64 is a viable route, you could take that east to NC751, and then north to I-40 to NC147. That wouldn't be too bad - pretty much a factor distance rather than traffic.

But, if instead you have to head north on US15-501, to the 54 bypass around Chapel Hill, to 54 East to I-40, you're going to hit some significant slowdowns on the bypass and 54 east due to University and commuter traffic during normal rush hour times.

Have you considered other small towns? Have you checked out Hillsborough? You can get to Ellis Rd. in 20 minutes. Efland and Mebane are also great choices close to the same commute time.

I can reliably get from Duke to where 64 crosses the Haw in 45 min, sometimes as quick as 30 min, taking 15-501 thru chapel hill.

Our address is Pittsboro, but we live a bit farther east than where you are looking - near Seaforth Rd/Hwy 64. I work off Ellis Road ~1/2 mile from 147 and it typically takes me 35 minutes to get to work (via 64/some backroads/751). So maybe add 10 minutes to that if you are going to be in town?

There are back roads from Pittsboro to South Durham (i-40). 15-501 out of Pittsboro and then you can take either Lystra or Jack Bennett Rd and these connect you into the "Farrington" Rds... there is Farrington Mill, Farrington etc. You can take Farrrington to where 54 & 40 meet or you can turn off of Farrington and onto Stage Coach I believe and wind your way to 751. Depending on which side of Jordan Lake you are on this might be helpful.... or not.

In the fall I traveled daily from South Durham (near South Point) to about the Fearington Village area and took back roads... took me about 25 mins.

I've met several couples who live in Pittsboro and one works an UNC and the other at Duke. So it can be done. BUT honestly, I would look at Hillsborough instead.
