My friend has a cat that has been urinating on her wood floors out of spite whenever they travel out of town. Boarding her isn't an option as she urinates after she gets home because she's still mad. She's been checked out by a vet and has a clean bill of health. Are there any local rescue agencies that will take a cat like this? She hasn't found any vet who will euthanize the cat because they want to exhaust all medical options first. Friend says she doesn't get along well with other cats. She's not declawed so she might be okay as an outdoor cat, but friend has 2 kids and she'd rather have the cat re-homed than put her outside where her kids might let cat back in. Any suggestions? Cat is older than 10 I believe.

Pets are a lifetime responsiblity. You don't dump a 10 year old cat just because you are tired of it. Tell your friend to suck it up and come up with a solution.

She's teaching her kids a great lesson about respect for life that you can just kill a famly pet or dump it.

Rescues and no kill shelters won't take a household pet. There are far too many animals out there who don't have homes and there's not even enough space for them. But it sounds like she wants it euthanized if she's looking for a vet to do it?

Is the problem only when they are traveling? I agree with the PP that they just need to suck it up. Adjust their travel plans. Bring the pet. Whatever they have to do. It's their responsibility, it's a member of their family. Just my 2 cents.

I suggest she follow the advice of professionals and find the root of the problem then work on correcting it rather than trying to kill the poor cat or dumping it in somebody else's lap.

She's not looking to "dump" the cat. The cat is causing extensive damage to her flooring. They've already replaced the carpet with hardwoods thinking that might solve the problem. She is hoping to find a place that might rehome the cat with someone who doesn't travel or have other pets. If the cat is angry they leave it at home (and really who brings a cat on trips) why is it so wrong to try to find it a home with someone who doesn't travel?!?! Vets cannot find anything wrong with the cat physically. This has been happening for months. She and her husband are at the end of their ropes trying to figure out what they can do with the cat so it won't destroy any more of their house. If you can't offer a helpful suggestion please keep your opinions to yourself.

She still has her claws, so that rules out plastic bags. Best to use burlap then.

Making her an outdoor cat might be an option, like you mentioned, but she's afraid her kids would let the cat back in? You gotta be kidding. If she can't teach her kids to keep the cat outside, then she has no hope training a cat, and no business owning a cat. Not trying to be too rude or hard on your pal, but this sounds messed up. Shes been to Vets (plural) to try to get it euthanized. Why has she not taken it to the Wake County animal shelter? It's free to dump off a pet, and hopefully it can be adopted into a loving home.

You asked for opinions on a public board...you don't get to pick and choose them.

Your friend is 'indeed trying to dump and/or kill the family pet. You can sugar coat it and justify it all you want, but it doesn't change the reality of it. So they travel...they should have taken that into consideration before they took on the RESPONSIBLITY of pet ownership.

What happens when one of their kids messes up their travel plans> Harder to dump kids.

Very well said. Poor cat, probably pees all over the floors because it has a family that doesn't care about it.

Listen, she has been trying to come up with a solution. Quit judging someone you don't know. The cats (2 of them) came well before kids. This one seems to have flipped out in recent months. Vets told her euthanizing isn't something they do unless all other issues have been ruled out, she didn't solicit that information. It was given to her when she took the cat to the vet to try to find out what is wrong with it. She is trying to figure this out. She doesn't want to kill her cat and the shelter is likely to do that which is why she hasn't just "dumped" her off there. She thinks the cat is stressed out and thinks a new home with someone who doesn't travel would be a better option for the cat. She said the cat is a very sweet cat, just quite spiteful when they leave. They are trying to be RESPONSIBLE and find a place where they think the cat would be happier having someone home all the time which is impossible for them to offer the cat. Why don't one of you judging folks take the cat for her and give it the life it deserves?

Yeah, families that don't care about pets normally take it to the vet and try different medications to seek out a solution that has even stumped the veterinary professionals.
