I recommend reading the city-data Utah forums. They're fascinating as far as the relationship between Mormons and newcomers.

From the posts I think I've gathered that it will be difficult but not impossible for jobs and also that NCSU is the way to go for tech. Thanks for the help.
Hi - I'm a recent transplant from the UK myself (about 18 months now) and am working with a software company. My situation is different, as I moved here as a part of setting up a new US office. If you don't have the Visa challenges, this isnt a bad place to be

Of course, it is all relative - your age, depending on where in the UK you used to live (I was in London), will all help with getting used to the lifestyle here. However, I am not seeing a massive recruitment drive going on - there are jobs out there, but as other people have said, the desperation of the unemployed means that the employers have more options when recruiting - and therefore are going for experience to decide. (the flip side to this argument is that less experience = cheaper of course)

Definately have a look, but if you can study while you're here and can support yourself without a local income for a while, it's certainly something to consider!

Good luck

I applied to an embedded software engineering job today. The company website required me to enter in personal and professional info about myself, as most do. However, I was very ticked off by 3 questions that required answers.

1. Base salary requirements: There was a pulldown menu for you to select a dollar amount
2. Bonus: A text field for you to enter a percentage
3. What are your base salary requirements at this time? (please be specific, do not reply "negotiable".): Again with the salary requirements? Makes it really obvious that the competition is fierce and this company is looking for the most desperate applicants.

I find those the most unfair and obnoxious questions on any application. Makes me wonder what kind of management would allow them. If you identify an amount too high, you're out. If too low, you don't sound worthwile, and you're out. You can't win.

When I am asked in person or on the phone what my salary requirements are, I always ask what the salary range is. I want to be paid a fair salary and not "win" a job as the lowest bidder.
