Google Maps shows it being about 1.5 hours. Does that sound about right? Is their a particular route that is more scenic than others? Any points of interest along the way? I haven't been to Lake Gaston before and am looking forward to checking out something new. If I get a chance I will snap a few pictures and post them here.

Thanks!

Depending on where on the lake 1-1.5 hours, depeding on where in Raleigh you leave from.

There basically isn't crap on your way there. If you are into Photog stuff, there is some probably good stuff to stop and snap, but noting "worth" noting to the forum, etc.

1.5 hours sounds a bit long. But, depending on how far East you are going will stretch the drive. Also, whether or not you are hitting the North side or the South Side will make a difference.
Personally, from North Raleigh, I'd go up US 1. It's nothing terribly scenic but it is a pretty good direct route to the general area.

Depends what "north Raleigh" means - sounds in the ballpark.

Sorry don't know of anything worth checking on the way.

Going up and down US1 in the past, I have always been intrigued by some of the biker bars along the highway. I haven't been to any of them but I'd love to see what they look like on the inside. Frankly, I have the same curiosity about some of the country churches too. Alas, I'll never find myself in either.

When are you going?

If you can time your trip for it then stopping by the Ridgeway Opry House is a unique experience. Performances are generally on Saturday night. The atmosphere is very casual and the music is great. Think bluegrass with various musicians just joining in.

There's also some kind of peanut shop up that way where my sister-in-law made us stop. I'll see if I can find out the name, but this may have been it: http://www.peanut.com/locations.asp (broken link) . (My sister-in-law is from Warren County, so that's where I learned about the Ridgeway Opry House.)

The peanut roaster is off 85 I believe, and if you are going via Raleigh, it would add a good amount of time to the trip.

If you go up rt. 1, don't forget to take a picture of the "Church on Fire" in Henderson. It'll be on your right hand side going north. My wife and I always get a good laugh every time we go that way to visit family.
