Hi All ,

With all the warm days around...i got a flyer about Attic Fan installation for $599...anyone has any recommendations?
First of all..is it good? does it really help?
Any recommendations on contractors who has done a good job installing them?
Thanks!

Do you have gable vents in your roof? These are the little round louvered holes at the ends of the attic that let air in the attic.

We had an attic fan growing up in MD and it was great, especially on nights when the air would cool off outside, but it was still warm inside. That fan could cool the house down very quickly and saved AC bills.

I have one in my house (installed by previous owners) and it's fantastic in the spring & fall. As long as the outside temp is cooler than inside it works well. I *never* use it at the same time as running the AC and that's not what it's for. Mine is on one of those tension-timers and will run up to 10 or 12 hrs, though I usually run it for about 2 to 3 hrs. at night in the spring and fall. I open windows downstairs and up and the cool air pushes all that hot air out of the house. Fantastic!

Here's an interesting article from Advanced Energy, which is an excellent site for info. I disconnected my attic fan after reading what they had to say. In the summertime, all my attic fan did was draw humidity into the house. Since I have a one-story house though I don't have to worry about cooling off the upstaris. I hope this link works. If not, just google "Advanced Enerty" and then click on "buildings."
best,
toodie

The attic fan in the summer is not a useful tool because of the heat/humidity outside. You really need to only use it when the outside temps are cool and the humidity is lower than it is in the summer in NC. It's a great tool for spring and fall, night and early morning. NOT so good for the summer.

I think some of you are referring to a "whole house fan" mounted in the ceiling that is used by opening windows and turning the fan on pulling fresh air into the house. This flier is for an attic fan mounted in the roof sheathing. Do NOT install one as they cost more enegry than they can save. They are also a fire hazard as the motor burns out after a few years, but electricity is still supplied causing overheating. Most people will not realize the motor has burned out because the fans are almost inaudible inside the house when working. The reason they cost more energy is they pull conditioned air from your house when they cannot get enough air from the soffit vents. They are an old idea that sounded good at the time, but time has shown otherwise. If you need more attic ventilation, install a ridge vent. Read the Advanced Energy article, that group is the end-all be-all of house science.

Ahhhh....okay what I have is a "whole house fan." It is mounted in the attic ceiling (but not in the roof). It pulls in fresh air from the outside into the house when the windows are opened (along with the attic door of course). Totally rocks!
