I dropped mine off at the hazardous waste recycling facility at the Orange County Landfill. I would assume similar programs exist in other local counties.

I dropped my old thermostat (which had a mercury switch) off at the Wake County landfill off of NC55 between Apex and Holly Springs.

I tried to donate it to Habitat because it still worked, but they wouldn't take it because of the mercury switch.
