What are the best home communities in the $600-$800k range? Prefer to be in Cary, Apex, or N Raleigh. Amenities would be nice, but not required. Should have good schools and some shopping (grocery store) within 10 minutes or so. Prefer new construction, but would consider resale as well.
Lots of options in North Raleigh. I'm most familiar with the areas up Creedmoor Road, as that is the area I live in. A couple of neighborhoods that I'm familiar with are:
Parker Falls (http://www.parkerfalls.com/wphome.php) has homes from $700K, although most are in the $800K to $900K range. I'm familiar with several of the builders, and they do excellent work.
Ethans Glen (http://www.ethansglenfinehomes.com/) lists their prices from the $600K range. I've heard they are going to up that to the $700K for the new section, but there are plenty of resales in the $500-$600K range. As with Parker Falls, they have an excellent set of custom builders to choose from.
I'm sure there are additional neighborhoods in the area - I just haven't been paying all that much attention lately. And there are plenty of resales of newer homes (<5 years old) in the area in the $600K to $700K range.
Here are a few you can look at in Northwest Cary, all new construction:
Highcroft (www.highcroftliving.com): This neighborhood is almost complete, so there aren't tons of lots still available. Some of the homes back wooded buffers that have parks on the other side. Be careful though, some of those wooded buffers in one corner of the neighborhood will back I-540 one day. They have a pool, tot lots, and an elementary school within the neighborhood. It is also located right next to two parks.
Cameron Pond (www.cameronpond.com): Some of the homes located on the pond are up near $800k - nice views from the back porches. Again, 540 will come very close to this neighborhood, if that's a concern to you. They have a pool, and I think they have tot lots.
Weycroft (www.weycroft.com): Very new neighborhood, many open lots still. Lots are slightly larger than Cameron Pond and Highcroft (avg about .3 acres), and further away from 540. The homes start around 600k, and the homes around the perimeter of the neighborhood back a wooded buffer (eventually, Amberly will be on the other side, but the buffer will stay). Those homes range up to $800k currently. They don't have their own pool, but you have access to Cameron Pond's pool (about a 2 minute drive).
Cary Park (http://www.carypark.net/ (broken link) ): Not sure how many lots are left in here, but lots of amenities and homes on the lake (the lake is bigger than Cameron Pond's pond).
Hope this helps!

Reason: forgot to add cary park
There really isn't the best home community. So many to choose from, and you have to see whats the best for you and your family. Whats the best for you, may not be the best for the other person.
It really depends on your criteria - there are plenty of neighborhoods, and in this area at that price point, you will have plenty of options, especially in new construction.
It might help to know where you priorities are - location, lot size, neighborhood amenities, upgrades, square footage, commute...
Again, you'll probably be able to find it here! Happy house hunting!
Glenkirk in Cary, between Cary Parkway and Maynard.
John Wieland homes.
New available, with some nearly new resale available.
Drees is starting construction in Cole's Creek, their new subdivison off Maynard. "From the high 500's." That's code for $600,000+. First listings run from $610,000 to $670,000. 3500-4300 SF.
Weston Manor.
John Wieland is also geting started in Westongate Manor off Harrison Ave. $700's. Basements available.
IMO, all these neighborhoods put you in easy reach of everything Cary has to offer, without Airport or 540 noise considerations. Also, easy commutes to Raleigh, RTP, NC State.

No disrespect to Wieland, Drees, and other regional builders, but in that price range, I think you can do better with a local custom builder. When we looked at Wieland, at first blush, there was a lot to like. But once we took a closer look, we found his homes didn't put enough emphasis on certain features we valued. Which is fine - but when we were told we couldn't upgrade those areas - we went looking elsewhere.
We've just recently put a down payment on a new build at The Oaks at Meadowridge. The builders are Toll Brothers. Most of the lots are around an acre and the builders seem to have a good reputation.
The site is off Holly Springs road so has both easy access to Cary and Raliegh.
We saw a number of new communities while on a weeks visit back in February and fell for this site immediately. The site still has trees and felt good. We also really liked the home plans.
There is no community pool but there is access to nearby Lochmere.
Barbara Savage is the sales agent there and has been very helpful to us, especially as we are in the UK.
We also have a great Realtor who starting queing up at 6:30 am on a Sunday morning to ensure we got the lot we wanted. Way beyond the call of duty and he's a great guy.
Copperleaf, brand new, opening this spring/summer.
Abbington, new phase just opened.
