HI, Just moved recently from CT and I was wondering who uses the quick 10 minute oil change places and who goes to a mechanic? I used to only use a mechanic and have always had concerns about the quick places..I live in Raleigh on the knightdale line off of 64BR???Any suggestions..Any mechanic names or which quick places do you use?
I stay away from those quick lube places. They often get into such a hurry they don't allow all the old oil to drain out. Then they overfill the engine with oil which can damage your seals. About 20 years ago, one of those fast oil joints actually forgot to add oil once it was drained. It ruined my engine and involved an attorney to get them to pay for damages.
These days I change my own oil. This way I use a high quality filter and fully synthetic oil. It only takes me about 15 minutes and I know the job is done right.
I had used Jiffy Lube many times and never had a problem, but then I started seeing postings of numerous people locally who had had their car ruined by the exact Jiffy Lube I usually went to. Now I leave it at a service station.
Mechanic. My regular mechanic (Frantz Automotive in Cary) will book "while you wait" oil changes. In fact, had an oil change app't this morning on the way to work: in at 8:00, out by 8:20, and knew it was done properly.
Long ago I used Jiffy Lube type places -- gave that up after they cross threaded and jammed the oil pan plug -- not good. Didn't find out about it until the next oil change, at another place.
I have heard so many horror stories regarding botched oil change jobs at the cheap and quick places, that I recommend you steer clear as a general rule.
Some however are fine. If the owner is always on site, and you know them to be conscientious, then their shop and employees should be a good way to save money.
I save the maximum $$ by changing my own oil. Walmart will accept used oil from D-I-Y'ers for disposal.
Okay - I'm a rather prissy girl, I'll admit it... what exactly is involved in changing your own oil? Is it something that could be done without getting filthy and maybe using gloves to protect one's hands/nails from the oil?
I've never really thought about doing it myself, but it must be less expensive that way.
