I lived in Maynard (Summerhill Road) in the early 2000's. It really is a special place with it's walkable downtown, restaurant density (for a town with such a small residential population), and movie theater. Unfortunately, I don't think you'll find a community/neighborhood here that is like Maynard in all respects. Did I say that Maynard is special?
While the walkability is not as good as Maynard, Cary (just east of the downtown), there is the Galaxy Theater (a multi-screen movie theater showing more artsy films and Indian Bollywood flicks), a string of Indian restaurants (on E Chatham) and at least one Thai. There are excellent car repair shops in downtown Cary, a great barber, a branc library, and a plan to redevelop the downtown core, including the construction of a Performing Arts Center.
In any case, don't check Cary off your list without some further investigation. A downtown Cary location will put you in good commuting distance to downtown Raleigh and a bus line runs from there to downtown Raleigh. PM me if you're interested in additional information!
No one has mentioned Durham. That's where I lived. I'd take it over any of the other choices. It's grittier, sure, but it's much more interesting and varied. Durham is not obviously cool like Chapel Hill. You have to dig around a bit. It's worth it.
Have you thought about Fuquay Varina, particular its downtown?

They are doing a lot to restore it. It has walkability (honestly/seriously Cary is not that walkable) and not a lot of college students like Chapel Hill or Durham. Yes I realize that Cary does have some walkable areas, but on the whole it's just massive urban sprawl. I live in Cary so don't accuse me of being one of those naysayers. Cary does have its charm in some aspects, but I don't think you'll get a lot out of it for your age bracket at this point in your life.
just discovered the galaxy theater in Cary. great movie theater. i was pleasantly surprised to find a movie theater that featured indy movies in cary.
