I have been job hunting for my husband and myself from across the country. He works more hours than I do, so I apply for the jobs. He has a blue collar job (facilities technician- building maintenance/management). What I am trying to find out is how to find jobs without using the Internet. When he got his job here almost 10 years ago it was through an ad in the local paper. Do they still do that in NC or is it all over the Internet? When he applied for his job he walked into places of employment and left resumes or filled out applications. Is that still done? We are going to be in the Triangle area May 1-11 and my husband would like to apply for jobs while there but we're not quite sure how to do so. Or where to apply. Any ideas, info would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

You can always look up the local classifieds online on the local newspaper website. Then your husband can mail in his resume or follow the instructions in the ad. Many companies take resumes and cover letters electronically. www.newsobserver.com

I wouldn't hesitate to bring resumes along when you visit the Triangle. If he sees a company and wants to drop off a resume, then he should! Especially if his appearance makes a good first impression, it can only help him. Otherwise, he's just a name on a paper resume. Stopping by in person will show he's serious.

I would also suggest applying for positions in advance of your trip and then contacting these employers a day or two ahed of your trip (or even during your trip) to let then know you submitted an application and resume and that will be in the area from May 1-11 and available for interviews. That's actually how I got an interview and an eventual job with my current employer!

I am going through a job search myself for the first time in ten years, and without the internet it is very difficult!

A few weeks ago I got all dressed up and, resume in hand, made the rounds to see several recruiters. At each place, the receptionist instructed me to go home, post my resume on their website, and then call for an appointment.

Also, new jobs are posted on the internet everyday, so if you aren't there to see them, you may miss some opportunities.

Most employers require applications be submitted on-line. They have software that scans the applications and resumes and looks for specific words (keywords). If the software does not find those words, than your application or resume will never be seen by a human being.

The internet is a wonderful thing, but I really hate the way it has replaced good, old fashioned face to face communication!

We did something very similar when we relocated to NC (from NJ). We had sold our home and put all our belongings in POD storage and took a resort rental (fully furnished with linens, dishes and all) over the winter. I did all the job hunting for dh and submitted most of the applications. I did do it over the internet though. Is the only reason you don't want to use the internet because you want to make appts while you are there? If so, you still can use the internet and set up interviews for that week. People will work with you.

My dh is also blue collar in a similar field, called Maintenance Mechanic or Stationary Engineer in NJ. He got a position at the EPA (actually for a contractor that works at the EPA) called HVAC mechanic. I found it at Trianglehelpwanted.com AND he was hired OVER THE PHONE. It was the strangest experience. I had trouble believing they could they really HIRE him over the phone and the entire time we were moving/finding an apt, etc.....I kept thinking someone was going to call with, "oops sorry we didn't mean to hire you, blahblahblah".

Anyhow, he's been there a year and is very happy. We also had an interview at NC State one day....we happened to be IN SC visiting family and got a call back so dh drove up for an interview. They move slow as a molasses there apparently and dh didn't hear back (after the boss LOVED him and told him he was a shoe in) until he had been at the EPA for months.

If you do decide to use the internet, I'd be happy to share the sites I used.
Lauren

Lauren, Thanks so much for the offer! I will be sending you a PM tomorrow morning (trying to get son ready for bed right now!). I would appreciate any info you are willing to share. I'm sure I haven't found all of the Internet sites for jobs yet. I will be checking out the site you mentioned!

I've been using the Internet for the job search but I was wondering about jobs out there that are not advertised on the Internet. How do you find out about them? It seems like there should be more jobs than are advertised. I believe I have read that only a small percentage are actually put on the Internet. I'm wondering how to find out about the others.

I love this board, such great folks willing to help each other!

Default HVAC/Maintenance mechanic Job Hunting in the Triangle

No problem Vicki....relocating is such a stressful time (gotta keep your eyes on the end result) so anything I can do to help my fellow relocators make a smoother transition. Sharing links is the least I can do.

There are so many of them so I'm not going to use the board linking and will just paste them here as is. I have no idea how they will come out but hoping you all can copy/paste them into your email program and then click on links or at least copy/paste.

The only bad experience we had was with CareerBuilder. Got all sorts of scam spam as a result of registering with them and would not recommend them or use them ever again (their responses were less than adequate too).

Hope this works. I checked some daily but most weekly or every few days. And as I said, it was the trianglehelpwanted.com that got us the job. Honestly, I don't think there ARE many jobs that aren't advertised on the internet. Most of the better maintenance jobs down here are with the larger companies (that will mostly ONLY see you via an internet job application), Universities (same deal here). You can also check the ADs in the local paper online; http://www.newsobserver.com/careerbuilder/index.html (broken link)

Good luck!
Lauren

Almost everything is advertised on the Internet these days. It seems like the only jobs that aren't are the ones being filled by word of mouth.
